The first bank in Sherman County was the Kansas Banking Company, which opened for business in April 1886. On the 19th of October, 1887, the Bank was moved about one half mile east to the new town of Goodland. In January of 1889 the name of the bank was changed to Goodland State Bank and the bank had capital stock of $10,000.00. The Goodland State Bank opened for business on Saturday morning, April 16th, 1904. The Bank was located on the east side of Main, between 9th and 10th Streets. Goodland State Bank moved to its present location on Wednesday, February 3, 1905.

The building was remodeled in 1962 and in 1964 the Goodland Daily News building, next to the Bank, was purchased and made into a drive-thru facility. In 1972 the name of the Bank was changed to the Goodland State Bank & Trust Co. and later that year a Drive-In Motor Bank was opened on the southeast corner of 10th and Center.

Further expansion into local communities occurred with the purchase of the Citizens State Bank in St. Francis in May, 1986 and the bank was re-named the St. Francis State Bank. In January of 1990, Peoples Heritage Federal Savings & Loan in Colby was purchased as a branch bank of the Goodland bank and the name of banks in Goodland and Colby was changed to BANKWEST. In June, 2000 the name of the Bank was changed to BANKWEST OF KANSAS.

Today, the bank remains a locally owned and managed community bank that takes pride in providing the very best service to the customers and to help them succeed with their financial goals. BANKWEST OF KANSAS offers a full range of products and services for individuals, businesses and agricultural related operations and remains a leader in technology.
